Academic Scholarships

Congratulations to Philip Dunne and Killian Kenny who were awarded Academic Scholarships at the Institute of Technology, Carlow. The students who were members of last year’s Leaving Certificate class were awarded scholarships in the Bachelor of Engineering in the Mechanical Engineering Degree Course. Both students were presented with their awards at a ceremony held in the college last Thursday 25 February. We wish both students every success in the future.

Cross County Success
Well done to Amy Murphy and Katie Conroy who represented our school at a recent Cross Country Competition. Congratulations to Amy who is now through to the All Ireland Cross Country School’s Championship. Both girls ran a great race, finishing strongly. Amy was one of fifteen athletes to quality out of a total of one hundred and twenty in the Junior Category. We wish Amy all the best in the All Ireland Finals which will take place at Cork Institute of Technology on Saturday 13 March.

Avondale Chess Team
On Wednesday our Chess Team travelled to Arklow Community College for the first round of the VEC South Wicklow Chess Tournament. The team is now looking forward to the next stage of the competition which will take place in Abbey Community College.

Senior Citizen Coffee Morning
A number of Senior Citizens from our area enjoyed a Coffee Morning organised by our Transition Year Students. Entertainment was provided by way of music and the students also prepared a visual presentation of life in 1950’s. Our guests enjoyed chatting and reminiscing with the students about their experiences of the fifties. Many thanks to Ms. Downey’s Home-Economics class, who prepared the refreshments and to all those involved in organising this enjoyable event.

Work Experience
Our Transition Years have recently returned from their work experience placements. This week as part of LCVP (Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme) our Fifth Year students began their work experience. Best wishes to our students, who we hope are working hard at this time. Many thanks to all the employers who provided them with work experience.

Yoga, Aromatherapy, Soccer and much more!
From Tuesday’s Yoga to Thursday’s Aromatherapy our Transition Year students have been busy enjoying many interesting events this week. Those less interested in the above (namely our male students) took part in a soccer league. The students are also looking forward to swimming in Wicklow on Wednesday. Having recently read The Lonely Bones they will also be travelling to a special screening of the movie at The Gaiety Cinema in Arklow.

LOG ON AND LEARN
Ten of our Transition Year students are volunteering for the The Log on and Learn Initiative, a community based project that involves Transition Year Students joining up with older members of their community in order to teach them computer and internet skills. The Project which is known as TY LOL will run for 8 weeks starting on Wednesday March 4th 2 - 3PM

Hamlet Trip

On Friday evening our Fifth Year students will travel to the Helix for a Second Age Production of Hamlet. The students who are studying the play for their Leaving Certificate are looking forward to the performance.

World Book Day Celebrations

This year at Avondale Community College we will be celebrating World Book Day in style. On Thursday 4 March, students and staff will dress up as characters from their favourite books. Prizes will be awarded to the best dressed in each year group. As part of this year’s celebrations our First and Second year students will also be taking part in a reading challenge. Other students will take time out to read a novel during World Book Day.
